The most valuable audience in Europe

Every day our local journalists produce authentic stories from the nine countries we cover – for a global audience of educated, cosmopolitan professionals.

A trusted source

“Few things are as daunting as pitching up in a new country but The Local quickly became a trusted source of local news and knowledge. We would often refer to it as we were preparing for meetings and events.”

Matthew Barzun | US Ambassador to Sweden, 2009-2011

What our clients say

We have an excellent collaboration. The Local offers solutions and creative ideas tailored to our target audience. Before publishing, we are in contact and exchange ideas. The articles they write always capture the content in an excellent, journalistic style.

Helene Komlos Grill

International Communications, Stockholm University

The reaction was ten times bigger than with any other channel we’ve tried. We got very relevant, highly-qualified customers. We got over 75 expressions of interest, we’ve converted seven and we’re talking to several more. What we sell costs €8,600, so that was a very good conversion rate.

We wanted to use The Local because it is in France but targets people who are not French. It worked really well – lots of people read the article, downloaded the brochure and filled in the enquiry form. An article allows you to say more and we can use it for other purposes too.

Here are the answers to some common questions about using branded content on The Local.

How does the process work?

Every piece of content that we produce must deliver value for our client and engage our readers. Our job is to tie these two goals together. Our method is to combine our editorial expertise with our large audience.

  1. Following briefing, we have an internal discussion about what content will work best for the particular campaign. Our journalists produce the content for client approval
  2. We publish the content on The Local – all branded, linked and set up for tracking
  3. The content is given home page exposure on one site for a month but stays on our sites for 12 months
  4. We push out the content in The Local’s social media channels
  5. After the first month, we provide the client with a report showing views, engagement, social media shares, clicks and so on
  6. Content can remain live beyond the first month
  7. Multiple articles are gathered on themed ‘section pages’
Do you measure the performance of the content?

As with our own news content, we apply rigorous tracking to our client editorial content. Reads, shares, time on page, % of video viewed, clicks, reach, sources – we focus on what matters to our clients and offer complete transparency.

At the end of each article campaign, we send our clients a report providing all the information necessary for evaluating the performance.

Do people actually read sponsored content?

They read it, they share it, they click on the links to our clients’ sites.

Why? Because all of our writers are former news journalists who instinctively understand what matters to our audience. Every piece of sponsored content we produce must tick two boxes: it must achieve what the client expects (brand exposure, lead generation and so on) and it must engage our readers.

We have produced 150,000 articles since The Local was founded in 2004. And we have told hundreds of clients’ stories. So we know what works. And unlike our news articles, which flow through the home page in a day, our client content remains on our sites’ front pages for a month and is promoted aggressively in our social media channels.

Will this create a lot of work for me?

Absolutely not. The process usually works like this:

We talk about what you want to communicate and to whom. Then we present you with some suggestions and when you give us the go-ahead we produce the content. If you can help to connect us to the people you want us to interview – your customers, your CEO – then that speeds things up. But we will do the legwork and then send you a draft for your approval before publishing.

Throughout the month that the article is live, we will monitor it continuously and optimise its placement on our sites. And then at the end of the month we will provide you with a detailed performance report.

Can my article be published on more than one of your sites?

Yes! We run editions of The Local in nine countries and your article can appear on any combination of those.

Can we use the article on our own site?

Once the article has been live on The Local for a month, you may use it in your own channels – digital, print or maybe emblazoned across the exterior of your headquarters.

We ask that you wait a month so that the search engine optimisation isn’t compromised by having identical content on two different sites.
