There is no single official amount of money everyone needs before moving to Austria, but we can help you understand your situation and how much you might need.
An EU citizen arriving with an Austrian employment contract should face no legal savings requirement. But someone applying for certain non-EU residence permits must prove they can support themselves for the duration of their stay.
Besides that upfront matter, there are also many practical issues and expenses. Even if immigration rules don't require a large bank balance, paying a rental deposit, the first month's rent and the costs of getting established can swallow several thousand euros before you've unpacked your bags.
So how much should you actually have?
If you're an EU citizen
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens don't need a visa or residence permit to move to Austria.
If you stay for more than three months, however, you need to qualify for residence under EU free-movement rules and apply for an Anmeldebescheinigung, or registration certificate, within four months of arriving.
According to Austria's official government portal, you qualify if you're employed or self-employed in Austria. Or you can show that you have sufficient financial resources and comprehensive health insurance, including if you're studying.
The government doesn't specify a single fixed savings threshold for EU citizens using the sufficient-resources route. The test is whether you have enough to avoid relying on Austrian social assistance or the equalisation supplement.
The Anmeldebescheinigung itself costs €44.
This is separate from your Meldezettel, the form used to register your address in Austria. According to Austria's official residence-registration guidance, registering your address is free and, in most cases, must be done within three days of moving into the accommodation.

If you're moving from outside the EU
For third-country nationals, the financial calculation can become much more important.
Many Austrian residence permits require applicants to demonstrate a gesicherter Lebensunterhalt, or secured means of subsistence.
For 2026, the general reference amounts are:
€1,308.39 per month for a single person
€2,064.12 per month for a married couple or registered partners
an additional €201.88 per month for each child
For certain residence permits for education purposes, including students and pupils, a lower rate applies to applicants under 24. In 2026, that rate is €722.58 per month. From age 24, the standard €1,308.39 single-person rate applies, according to Vienna's MA35 immigration department.
But these figures can be misleading and shouldn't be read on their own
This is because Austria also takes certain regular expenses into account, particularly rent, loan repayments and maintenance payments. Under the 2026 calculation, the first €386.43 of these monthly expenses is effectively disregarded, but any amount above that will reduce the income available for the financial test.
That means a single person paying €1,000 per month in qualifying housing costs, if those were their only qualifying regular expenses, wouldn't normally need to demonstrate just €1,308.39. The calculation would effectively require €1,308.39 plus €613.57, bringing the figure to €1,921.96 per month.
MA35's guidance also notes that accessible savings can count. In its calculation, savings are divided over 12 months and added to monthly income.
Not every residence title uses this general test. According to Austria's Interior Ministry, the Red-White-Red Card and EU Blue Card, among others, are exempt from this particular proof-of-subsistence requirement, although those immigration routes have their own conditions.
Other permits can demand considerably more. For example, Austria's official migration portal states that the settlement permit for financially independent people who aren't planning to work requires a monthly income of €2,616.78 for a single person or €4,128.24 for a couple in 2026, plus €403.76 per child.
This is a base income threshold, not the only condition. The permit is also subject to an annual quota and the general residence requirements.
So anyone moving from outside the EU should check the financial rules for their specific residence title instead of treating the general €1,308.39 figure as a universal immigration threshold.

Housing is where your savings can take a hit
A lot of people will notice that their biggest immediate expense is not really the immigration paperwork — it's moving into a new home.
Austria's official guidance says a rental deposit, or Kaution, of three gross monthly rents is customary. Deposits of up to six months can also be permissible, depending on the circumstances (they are very common, say, if you don't have three months of salary in Austria yet to show)
With a standard three-month deposit, moving into a flat charging €1,000 per month (also, good luck finding that in Vienna) could therefore require roughly €4,000 immediately: €3,000 for the deposit plus the first month's rent.
And newcomers should be careful when looking at Austria-wide average rental statistics.
Statistics Austria reported that the average rent, including running costs, across Austria's main rental apartments was €686.80 per apartment in the final quarter of 2025. But people moving to Austria now are generally searching among homes currently being advertised (and new contracts without the rental protections of older ones), where prices can be substantially higher.
An ImmoScout24 analysis of around 95,000 listings found that median asking rents in the first quarter of 2026 were around €16 per square metre nationally. Vienna was at €22.41 per square metre, Salzburg at €21.23, and Tirol at €21.13. The figures include running costs but not heating or electricity.
For a 50-square-metre flat, that works out at roughly €800 a month at the national asking-rent level, but more than €1,100 in Vienna.
At €1,100 a month, a conventional three-month deposit plus the first month's rent would already come to about €4,400.

So what is a sensible amount to save?
For someone moving alone with a job already secured, a useful starting formula is:
expected monthly rent × four, then add an emergency and settling-in buffer.
The four months cover a typical three-month deposit and the first month's rent. On top of that, you'll need money for food, transport, household items, any temporary accommodation, travel to Austria and the gap before your first salary arrives.
Using current rental prices, around €5,000 might be workable for a relatively inexpensive move where housing is already arranged, and your income starts immediately.
For a single person renting privately in Vienna, Salzburg or Innsbruck, around €6,000 to €8,000 would give considerably more breathing room. A family renting a larger property could easily need €9,000 to €12,000 or more before factoring in international removal costs.
Those aren't Austrian government requirements. They're practical estimates based on current asking rents, the usual rental deposit and leaving (some) money available after collecting the keys — every family will have different needs and should factor those in.
If you're arriving without a job, without permanent accommodation, or with several weeks of temporary housing to cover, the safer amount rises significantly. In that situation, having several months of expected living costs on top of your rental start-up money makes much more sense than arriving with just enough to sign a lease.

Don't confuse your emergency fund with your immigration requirement
Having €8,000 available may make an ordinary relocation much less stressful, but it doesn't mean you satisfy the financial requirements for a residence permit.
For example, using Vienna's official calculation method, imagine a single applicant relying entirely on savings for a 12-month residence title and paying around €1,122 a month in rent, with no other qualifying regular expenses.
After accounting for the €386.43 allowance, they would need resources of roughly €2,044 per month. Over 12 months, that would be around €24,500.
The exact calculation depends on your income, savings, housing costs, family circumstances and residence title, so this isn't a general minimum for moving to Austria. It does show why "How much cash do I need to move?" and "How much money do Austrian immigration authorities require me to prove?" can have very different answers.
