Record energy prices in central Norway
Central Norway, which over the past year has seen electricity prices well below the levels seen in southern parts of the country, saw a record for energy costs this weekend.
The weekend energy price record for central Norway was shattered on Sunday. During the day, an average price of 2.71 kroner per kilowatt hour, including VAT, taxes and grid rent, was recorded, Europower reports.
Over the past 18 months, central and northern parts of the country have been able to avoid price records being shattered weekly and monthly, unlike the south.
However, prices have recently begun to spike in the north and central areas of Norway, with those areas seeing similar price levels to the rest of the country.
Lower temperatures than typical have contributed to higher energy prices in Norway. The average temperature in the Nordics is around 2.5 degrees lower than is normal for the time of the year.
This has led to more people heating their homes and consuming more energy, which in turn causes prices to go up.
A cold snap in December is expected to contribute to much higher energy prices throughout December than were seen in November and October.

During these two months, prices were lower due to Norwegian hydroelectric reservoirs being replenished and warmer than average temperatures meaning consumers were using less energy.
