A heatwave in Vienna is set to continue today as the temperature is forecast to hit the mid-30s on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Accuweather, the temperature will reach 33 degrees this afternoon in the Austrian capital city, following several days of very hot weather across the country.

The outdoor pool in Leopoldstadt is expected to be busy as city residents try to cool off, with paramedics on standby in the event of sunstroke or heat exhaustion.

The hot weather also coincides with the England vs Germany Euro 2020 game this evening, which starts at 18:00, and can be watched at several different venues across the city.

However, from tomorrow the temperature in Vienna will start to drop with a forecast for thunderstorms on Wednesday and Thursday.

A heat wave is then forecast to return next week.

High temperatures in the 30s are also expected today in the city of Graz and the province of Burgenland.

What is the Hitzefrei rule?

The Hitzefrei (heat free) rule in Austria means that people in outdoor jobs can stop working when the temperature hits 32.5 degrees.

It also applies to animals with the Fiaker horses in the city centre allowed to stay in the shade or in a barn when the temperature hits 35 degrees.

But the Vier Pfoten (Four Paws) and Verein Gegen Tierfabrik (Association Against Animal Factories) organisations are calling for the mandate to be changed to 30 degrees to protect the animals from the impacts of excessive heat.

What about the rest of Austria?

Elsewhere in Austria the weather is cooling down after high temperatures on Sunday and Monday.

In the mountains in Tyrol, intermittent rain and thunderstorms are expected today and temperatures will drop to the mid-20s after the mercury passed 30 degrees yesterday afternoon.

The temperature is then forecast to drop to 17 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday before creeping up into the 20s again at the weekend.

The forecast for the rest of the week is similar for Linz, Graz and Salzburg, with a couple of days of cooler weather before warmer temperatures in the upper 20s return at the weekend.
