Night trains in Vienna are returning for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic began in March 2020, 467 days after their last use.

With the extended opening times and the end of the curfew from July 1st, the use of the night subway makes sense again, according to Wiener Linien.

The trains will start running again through the night from Friday, June 25th.

Underground trains will run every 15 minutes all night before Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

A night tram will also be in use in the future. The U2Z tram will run for the time in which the U2 underground line is under construction.

FFP2 masks will still be mandatory on public transport until June 30th, when mouth and nose protection must still be worn, i.e. cotton masks and scarves.

Night traffic on the Vienna subway started in 2010 on weekends and ran all the way until the pandemic hit.

The government said its return was a welcome sign that things were returning to normality in Vienna.

"Before the coronavirus hit, the night underground was an integral and important part of Viennese nightlife. So I'm especially happy that the night underground is back," said Public Transport City Councilor Peter Hanke.

"Just in time for the opening of the after-sales service, the night underground ensures that everyone who savor the Viennese nightlife arrives safely and safely at home."
