The City of Vienna has floated the idea of vaccination parties for younger people to speed up the roll-out of the Covid-19 vaccine programme - but what does it mean? And will it happen?

The idea has come forward as businesses across Austria prepare for further opening steps on 1 July when the federal government will roll back Covid-19 restrictions, including the midnight curfew for hospitality venues.

A big concern has been the reopening of nightclubs - particularly as the environment poses a high risk of spreading and contracting the virus as people congregate together in enclosed spaces.

So, what’s the solution? According to the city of Vienna, vaccination parties are the answer.

What is the idea behind vaccination parties?

The City of Vienna has said it might not relax all Covid-19 measures on 1 July in line with the rest of the country.

Instead, access to night-time venues might only be granted to people that have been fully vaccinated or recovered from the virus and not those that test negative, according to the Wiener Zeitung.

The problem is that many younger people have not yet been vaccinated after the registration for 18 to 30 years olds only opened last week.

So in a bid to avoid them being excluded from enjoying the same rights as others, the Viennese government is now considering so-called “vaccination parties”.

The concept is a relaxed outdoor setting with live music where people would be invited to receive their vaccine and have the basic immunisation required to attend nightclubs and other late night venues.

The plan proposes the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine because only one shot is needed, instead of two shots with other vaccines, like AstraZeneca and Pfizer.

When would the vaccination parties start?

The suggested campaign would start at the beginning of July, although no exact date has been set.

Ideas include a single large event in an open space, like at St. Marx in Vienna-Landstrasse, or several smaller events spread out across the city with mobile vaccination teams administering the shots.

A partnership with the Vienna cultural summer programme has also been reported as a possible option.

Vaccination parties have not yet been planned or suggested in other federal states.
