Oslo eases Covid restrictions

Covid-19 Measures in Oslo have been relaxed to bring restrictions in the Norwegian capital more in line with national coronavirus rules.

"The gradual, controlled opening of Oslo has been a success. Many of the rules that the people of Oslo have been expected to live with are now being removed, and we will essentially live with the same corona rules as people elsewhere in Norway," Oslo's Executive Mayor, Raymond Johansen, told reporters at a press conference.

From today, limits on the number of guests in homes and both restrictions for both indoor and outdoor events are being relaxed. They will be replaced with national measures instead.

In addition to this, social distancing has been cut in half to one metre, and face masks will now only be mandatory on public transport and in taxis.

The new rules mix steps three and four of Oslo's five-step plan to lift measures and reopen the city.

The previous forecast from the health institute was that everyone over 18 would have been offered their second jab by September.

The reason for the delay is that Pfizer will now deliver 900,000 fewer doses in the next three months than Norway had expected.

Norway and UK finish work on world's longest undersea power cable

Norway and the UK have finished laying the worlds longest subsea power cable, which will send wind and hydro energy between the two countries.

The cable is 720 kilometres long, with all but four of those being underwater, and links Suldal in southwest Norway with Blyth, near Newcastle.

The cable will send British wind energy to Norway and Norwegian hydropower to the UK.

The project is estimated to have cost between 1.5 billion and 2 billion Euros.

The cable takes the crown of the longest underwater tunnel from Nordlink, which connects Norway and Germany.

222 new Covid-19 cases in Norway

On Tuesday, 222 new coronavirus infections were registered in Norway. This is a rise of 49 on the seven-day average of 173.

In Oslo, 38 new Covid-19 cases were recorded, a slight increase of two on the city's seven-day average.

The R-number or reproduction rate in Norway is currently 0.9. This means that every ten people that are infected will, on average, only infect another nine people, indicating that the infection level is declining.
