From Wednesday, June 16th, temperatures will rise about 30 degrees in each of Austria’s nine federal states.

Temperatures will continue to climb towards the weekend where they will hit 35 in several regions, before reaching tops of 37 at the start of next week.

The heatwave will be followed by thunderstorms sweeping across the country.

“30 degrees will be reached in every federal state," said Manfred Spatzierer, chief meteorologist at Austria’s severe weather centre, when speaking with Austria’s Kronen Zeitung.

"The absolute highest temperatures are expected to reach around 32 degrees in the Inn Valley."

The lowest temperature will be 15.2 degrees in Wolfsegg.

Heat from the south

The reason for the heatwave will be hot air moving up from Southern Europe towards Austria.

The hottest temperatures are expected for Austria’s eastern flatlands, but the heatwave is predicted to reach each of the country’s federal states.
