Sweden releases first coronavirus update in a week after cyber attack
Sweden's coronavirus numbers appear to continue to trend down, as almost half the adult population have received their first dose of vaccine.
Thursday's figures for death rate and infections are the first to be reported by the Public Health Agency in a week. On May 27th, the Sminet database, where reports of infectious diseases are stored, was subjected to an attempted data breach, and it was temporarily shut down while this was being investigated. This means that the data presented today may not be fully up to date.
According to the update, however, a total of 1,076,993 coronavirus cases have been confirmed since the start of the pandemic. Sweden's death toll has reached 14,512.
Over the past 14 days, Covid-19 has been found in 210 people per 100,000 inhabitants, half the incidence rate reported last week.
State epidemiologist Anders Tegnell said that despite the missing data, "the decline feels very clear and very stable and it probably depends above all on the vaccination and that it is a different season".
Tegnell said things were moving in the right direction, even in countries that have previously been hit hard.
"We have had an improvement for a few months now. We are down to levels where we have not been for a long time. Europe is moving towards a better period, which is probably a mixture of the season and vaccination in several countries," he said at a press conference.
So far, 3,804,733 people in Sweden have received at least one dose of the Covid vaccine, based on what the regions have reported to the national vaccination register. This corresponds to 46.5 percent of the adult population.
Of these, 1,595,703 have received two doses, corresponding to 19.5 percent.
The new deaths in the Public Health Agency's statistics happened several days before they get reported. More recent deaths are not included due to delays in the reporting. This means that the update shows reported death rates, not the death rate for that particular day.
