Traffic authorities warned of busy days as people in France headed off on the first long weekend since the government lifted the limits on travel in place to stem Covid-19.

Roads will be busy with cars on Wednesday, traffic authorities warned, as many people in France will make use of Thursday's public holiday to faire le pont (do the bridge) and take an extra long weekend.

France recently lifted its ban on non-essential travel, the first step in a phased reopening that will have the country returned to a near-normal level by July, if the health situation allows.

Bison Futé, the government-run website that monitors traffic levels in France, put the entire country on orange alert (third highest) on Wednesday for departures, except for the greater Paris region Île-de-France, which was on red alert (second highest).

Traffic levels would be normal in the other (return) direction.

The situation would worsen in the south east on Thursday, with more areas upgraded to a red level.

On Friday and Saturday the traffic will be back to a normal (green) level, according to Bison Futé, before the whole country turns red in the return direction on Sunday as people head back home.
