Police move in against parties and crowds as Germans take to parks in sunny weather
The summer temperatures over the weekend in Germany brought people flooding into parks, leading to several tense situations as police attempted to enforce pandemic restrictions.
In Munich's English Garden park youths attacked police with bottles leading to 19 officers suffering injuries, according to a police spokesperson.
Officers had been called to deal with a brawl at an illegal party and responded by using pepper spray and batons.
"I can very well understand that people are drawn outside by the beautiful weather and warm temperatures," Bavarian interior minister Joachim Herrmann said on Sunday.
"But I cannot understand the behaviour of people who do not abide by any regulations, as happened yesterday in the English Garden," he added.
Elsewhere in Munich, police clamped down on areas where crowds of people began to gather. This included clearing people out of the Viktualienmarkt, Gärtnerplatz and Akademiestraße.
In Ulm in Baden-Württemberg, officers broke up a gathering of 20 young people in Saturday evening. Three teenage girls refused to show their ID cards and were taken to their parents by the officers. According to police, the girls, who were drunk, can now expect to face charges.
In Berlin, police broke up a crowd of around 300 people in Görlitzer Park on Saturday evening. In addition, a party on the grounds of a former hospital in Buch had to be broken up.
Similar police operations took place in Saarland, Oldenburg and other parts of the country.
