Vienna will relax the state's strict lockdown rules on May 3rd. Here's what you need to know.

The rules, in place since April 1st, have been continually extended, however Mayor Michael Ludwig said the lockdown can now be relaxed as “the measures have worked in the eastern region (of the country) as well as in Vienna”.

From May 3rd, the rules in place across Austria will come into effect in Vienna. This means non-essential shops can again open their doors, while hairdressers and other close-contact services will again be allowed to open.

Museums, exhibition centres and leisure activities such as zoos may also reopen on May 3rd.

The two other eastern states which also put in place lockdown rules on April 1st - Lower Austria and Burgenland - have also decided to relax the tighter measures.

Burgenland has already relaxed its measures, while Lower Austria will do so from May 3rd - the same day as Vienna.

Ludwig said Viennese could be cautiously optimistic as while things had improved "we are still above the critical limit of 33 percent corona patients in the intensive care units."

Ludwig said people in Vienna should be careful about transmitting the virus, particularly at home.

“Unfortunately, infections still occur here. The virus will not suddenly grow out of the ground, but someone will bring it with them. Therefore I appeal to the common sense of the Viennese."

Furthermore, the mask requirement in five public places in Vienna, such as the Danube Canal, ends on May 3rd.
