First region in Sweden rolls out Phase 3 of Covid-19 vaccinations
Kalmar in south-eastern Sweden has become the first Swedish region to launch the next phase of Covid-19 vaccinations.
Kalmar launched Phase 3 of Sweden’s Covid-19 vaccination scheme on Wednesday, with letters being sent out to people aged 60-64 starting today. This means everyone over the age of 60 will be able to get vaccinated in the region, earlier than the rest of Sweden.
The region wrote in a press release that it had been able to scale up the number of available appointments due to increased deliveries of vaccine in recent and coming weeks.
The following groups will also eventually be included in Phase 3: over-18s who have certain underlying health conditions, including chronic heart, lung, liver or kidney disease, severe asthma, diabetes, health conditions that cause impaired lung functioning (for example extreme obesity, neuromuscular diseases or multiple disabilities), Down syndrome, or people with a severely weakened immune system due to illness or ongoing medical treatment. Kalmar's vaccine coordinator told The Local that the vaccine would be rolled out to these groups in the coming weeks.

Most Swedish regions are currently vaccinating people in Phase 2, including over-65s, people with dialysis or recent transplants recipients and other adults who share a household with them, healthcare workers, and people who receive LSS disability support.

Almost 1.5 million people have been given at least one dose of a vaccine in Sweden, and the country expects to have offered the first dose to all adults by August 15th.
