Health minister Rudolph Anschober has announced Austria has ordered a further six million vaccine doses from the EU.

This brings the total amount of doses to just under 30 million.

The majority (4.7 million doses) will come from Moderna, and will be available at the end of the second quarter of the year.

The other part of the order goes to the French company Valneva, whose vaccine has not yet been approved and which should not be available until the end of the year.

The Valneva vaccine, which is being developed with Austrian participation, is of interest because it could possibly also get approval for children and adolescents.

In a press conference Anschober said there were no considerations of deferring the AstraZeneca vaccine over the South African variant, and said the priority was to limit this mutation.

What has Austria ordered so far?

Previously Austria had ordered 5.9 million vaccine doses from AstraZeneca and 2.5 million doses from Johnson & Johnson. The largest amount, however, comes from Biontech / Pfizer with 11.1 million doses.

The goal remains for Austria to have given two million doses of vaccine by the end of Easter, meaning one million people will be immunised by then.

Anschober said that remained the goal.
