Green Party gets new leader – and government reshuffle?

The junior partner in Sweden's government, the Green Party, has elected a new party spokesperson after Isabella Lövin stepped down. Märta Stenevi will now lead the party together with Per Bolund, who is also Minister for Financial Markets and Housing.

Lövin's departure will also trigger a government reshuffle, as her positions as Environment Minister and Deputy Prime Minister are now left empty. Peter Eriksson, Sweden's Minister for International Development Cooperation, also stepped down before Christmas, which means three roles are currently potentially up for grabs.

Swedish vocabulary: spokesperson – språkrör (when referring to Sweden's two Green Party co-leaders)

Brrr! Sweden's cold snap to last for at least a week

Sweden is set to get another week of snow and temperatures below freezing – and the cold weather could very well last well into next week, at least in most of the country.

Temperatures may edge one or two degrees above freezing in southern Sweden.

At the moment it is colder than normal in almost all of Sweden, with the exception of the far north, according to national weather agency SMHI, reports the TT newswire.

Sweden beaten by Denmark in world handball final

Denmark defeated Sweden 26-24 at the 2021 World Men's Handball Championship, its second consecutive world handball title, after Mikkel Hansen grabbed seven goals and goalkeeper Niklas Landin made 15 saves.

But the young Swedish team, several of whom had never played a competitive international tournament for the national team, were still able to leave Egypt having gone above and beyond initial expectations.

That it was a prestigious match for the neighbours was also made clear by the Öresund Bridge that links the two countries together, which first lit up in Swedish and Danish colours at the start of the evening, then in Danish colours.

Swedish vocabulary: championship – mästerskap

One year on: How the pandemic has changed our lives in Sweden

Sweden confirmed its first case of coronavirus on January 31st, 2020, a woman in the city of Jönköping who tested positive and later recovered. Since then, more than half a million people in Sweden have had the infection, more than 11,000 have died, and more than 100 million cases have been reported globally. But there's light ahead: vaccinations are currently under way, and more than 200,000 Swedes have received the vaccine so far.

In this article HERE, we asked The Local's readers to reflect on the year that's been – and the year ahead.

Decision on stricter restrictions for foreign travellers to be made quickly

The police, coast guard and Migration Agency have until today to respond to a proposal that would require all foreign travellers to Sweden, born 2004 or earlier, to show a negative Covid-19 test. The proposal was requested by the Public Health Agency and is now being processed by the government, because it requires legislative action.

In a statement on Friday, the Public Health Agency also wrote that Swedish citizens (who cannot legally be prevented from entering Sweden) "and others travelling into the country who have for various reasons not been tested before departure should do so on the day of arrival". The Local will report further as soon as we know more.

The Public Health Agency also recommends that everyone arriving in Sweden from any country in the world stay at home and avoid contacts for seven days – and get a second test on day five, in addition to the first test that they got before arriving in or departing for Sweden. The rest of their household is also urged to stay at home during this time.

Swedish vocabulary: avoid – undvika
