Sweden's public health chief rode the bus without a face mask
Sweden's public health chief has admitted using public transport during rush hour without a face mask despite his own agency's recommendations, saying it was an "embarrassing" mistake.
The Local asked state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell if the agency had considered if a recommendation applying at all times, or based on crowding rather than time, would be clearer and more effective.
"We have discussed that quite a lot, and seen pros and cons of different approaches. We ended up saying that this is the most efficient approach we can think of, that we actually look at certain hours during the day, where we know from statistics that the risk of crowding is the biggest. We still think that's the best way of doing it," said Tegnell.

New statistics on the Covid-19 vaccination in Sweden
216,269 people had been given at least one dose of a vaccine against the coronavirus had been administered by January 28th, and 14,248 had been given both doses. That's according to new statistics shared by the Public Health Agency on Thursday which also gave regional breakdowns; we will have a more detailed update for you on The Local later today.
As a proportion of the total population, the update means 2.65 percent have received at least one dose, and 0.17 percent two doses. The vaccine is not intended to reach 100 percent of the population; although it's recommended for all eligible adults, it is currently not recommended for children under 18, pregnant women, or some people who have experienced a serious allergic reaction previously.

First double hand transplant in the Nordics a success in Gothenburg
A patient received two new hands in the first transplant operation of its kind at Gothenburg's Sahlgrenska University Hospital before Christmas.
The patient, who had lost their hands due to a serious infection, received a new pair after an 18-hour operation, and has now been discharged from the hospital.
"Having two hands that I can move is a wonderful feeling. It's a big difference from the prostheses I had before," the patient was quoted as saying by the hospital.

Heavy snowfall continued through the night in southeastern Sweden, with the most arriving in Stockholm. Here's our round-up of some of the best snaps of the snow.

Black Lives Matter movement wins prestigious Swedish human rights prize
The Black Lives Matter Global Foundation has been awarded the Olof Palme Prize for its work in protesting and raising awareness of police brutality and racial violence worldwide.
The movement which started in America prompted protests around the world, including in Sweden where thousands gathered in cities including Stockholm and Malmö to protest racism in Sweden and abroad.
The Olof Palme Prize is an annual award which commemorates the memory of the Social Democratic prime minister, an outspoken international human rights advocate, who was assassinated in 1986.
