Norway has extended its ban on flights from the UK until 5pm on January 2nd to prevent the spread of the possibly more infectious variant of coronavirus which has spread in the southeast of the country.

In a statement posted on its website, the Norwegian government says that the extension is necessary "to prevent the spread of the new virus variant and to put in place the required routines and capacity for when we once again permit normal flights from the UK".

The ban, announced on December 21st after British health authorities went public with their findings about the new variant, was extended until December 29th two days later.

"It is still possible that the flight ban can be further extended," the statement reads.

The new variant of the coronavirus is believed to have first appeared in London and Kent and is reported to be up to 70 percent more contagious than other strains.

Based on what scientists know so far, the variant does not appear to cause more serious illness than other kinds of coronavirus.
