"This year, we won't only be keeping distance from the fireworks, but also from one another," Jørgen Bergen Skov, the chief of police in Copenhagen, said in a press release

Most of the square will be cordoned off on 30th December, with the square fully closed from 4pm on December 31st until 9.30am on January 1st.

There will be a passageway left clear to allow people to cross the square and reach the underground station in the middle of it.

Skov said that infection rates were currently high in Denmark's capital.

"It's in that light that Copenhagen's city government, under our  encouragement, is setting up cordons around most of Rådhuspladsen square to prevent too many people gathering as part of celebrations for the beginning of 2021," he said.

He called on people in the city to avoid crowded gatherings.

"This doesn't apply to Rådhuspladsen, but also to other places in the city, where we expect the maximum gathering of ten people to be taken literally."

The ban on the sale of alcohol after 10pm will also apply on New Year's Eve.
