Further restrictions begin in Italy on December 21st under measures hoped to curb Covid-19 infections.

Italy last week announced extra restrictions over Christmas and New Year period, and the rules under the emergency decree are set to change several times over the holidays.

Here are the updates to keep in mind from Monday December 21st:

A ban on non-essential travel between regions – any and all of them, regardless of which colour zone they are - begins on the 21st.

Travel between regions is now only allowed for work, health, and emergency reasons, and you'll need to take a completed self-certification form with you if travelling.

CALENDAR: How Italy's rules will change throughout Christmas and New Year

Nationwide rules stay in place, including an evening curfew from 10pm to 5am and the closure of all museums, cinemas, theatres and galleries.

Other rules still depend on which zone you are in under the tiered system.

Bars, restaurants and shops can remain open in yellow zones within the usual rules, though in orange zone Abruzzo they remain closed.

Find more information about the rules in each zone here.

The rules also get tighter on the 21st for travellers arriving from the EU, who now have to observe a 14-day quarantine if they enter Italy on or after December 21st.

In a separate rule change on Sunday, travel to and from the UK also became impossible until at least January 6th as Italy's government enforced a strict travel ban amid concerns about a new strain of coronavirus.

The next update to the rules in Italy will come on December 24th. Italy goes into temporary lockdown until the 27th, with maximum red zone restrictions applied across the whole country.

Please be aware that different regions of Italy may have additional local restrictions. Check the latest rules where you are: find out how to do that here.
