Additional coronavirus restrictions incoming

Further coronavirus restrictions are to be announced today, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has confirmed. The PM is scheduled to detail the measures at a briefing at noon, DR reports.

In a video she posted on social media, Frederiksen said the new restrictions would take the form of a “geographical, targeted, partial lockdown” in Aarhus, Odense, Copenhagen and municipalities on Zealand and around the capital city. News wire Ritzau is reporting 38 municipalities will be encompassed, which is more than a third of all local authorities in Denmark.

Copenhagen restrictions announced last week take force in full today, but Denmark has seen an increase in infections in recent days. This appears to have prompted further action from the government.

We’ll report the new restrictions in full as soon as we have them.

New lab in Aarhus boosts testing capacity

A new laboratory at Skejby University Hospital in Aarhus is set to give Denmark’s testing capacity a shot in the arm. The lab will be able to process 5,000 tests per day initially, but that will increase to 30,000 by the end of the month, DR writes.

This will increase daily testing capacity and reducing result waiting times, particularly for people in Jutland.

New farm to grow salad on 14-storey ‘vertical fields’

Agriculture firm Nordic Harvest is today presenting an innovative approach to farming with a new 14-storey salad farm in Taastrup near Copenhagen, broadcaster DR reports.

The multi-storey vegetable patch will use LED lights to ensure photosynthesis, according to the report.

No winter weather yet, despite colder temperatures this week

After a mild start to December, it’s going to feel colder this week – but don’t expect any sleighing or snowball fights yet.

Monday could see up to 9 degrees Celsius on the thermometer before a dip which will last the rest of the week, though the temperature will still be above freezing during the day. Wednesday is likely to see rain, according the meteorological agency DMI.

Danish vocabulary:

  • Etage: storey, level (in building)
