Brits, you can now apply for Swedish residence status
Brits who wish to apply for a new residence status to protect their long-term right to stay in Sweden post-Brexit are now able to do so – applications opened at 8am on Tuesday.
"Residence status is the new form of right to live in Sweden, which makes it possible for British citizens and their family members to continue living, working and studying here after the end of the transition period," said the Swedish Migration Agency in a statement on Tuesday.
The transition period ends on December 31st, 2020.
"A condition for obtaining residence status is that the applicant lives in Sweden in accordance with European Union law before the end of the transition period, but there are possibilities for children and close relatives to join their family later," added the Migration Agency.
Both online and downloadable forms were posted to the Migration Agency's website on Tuesday morning.
British citizens who need to apply for a new residence status should fill out one of those forms, and send in a copy of their passport or national ID card, and documents that show that you have the right of residence in Sweden. The application must be submitted before September 30th, 2021.
During the time that British applicants are waiting on a decision, they have the same rights as EU citizens and can continue to live and work in Sweden, as long as they moved before December 31st.
The Migration Agency will start processing applications in January.
