It’s not often Madrid sees such a phenomenon but on Tuesday night Spain’s capital was shrouded in dense fog giving the streets and iconic buildings a haunting atmosphere.

Madrileños shared their dramatic images of the pea-souper night on social media.

The Almudena Cathedral and Real Palace looked hauntingly beautiful in the diffused light.

The view from Madrid's four towers was quite spectacular:

The fog, known as 'niebla' in Spanish, gave a spookiness to the streets of La Latina.
