The Local's journalist Catherine Edwards has been named Rising Star of the year by the Swedish Magazine Publishers Association (Sveriges Tidskrifter).

"I am really proud of this achievement, especially with such strong competition – and almost exactly five years since I first moved to Sweden to join The Local. We have worked harder than ever this year to achieve our core goals of amplifying the voices of our readers and involving them in our reporting," said Catherine on Thursday.

The Rising Star category celebrated Sweden's journalists and media professionals under the age of 30, and Catherine faced off stiff competition from Eric Frånlund, Everysport Media Group; Olivia Lindström, Breakit; and Bilan Osman, Expo and Feministiskt Perspektiv.

Sveriges Tidskrifter said in a statement: "With skills and ability to listen the winner has succeeded journalistically and contributed to the digital reader business with her own ideas. She shares her knowledge as naturally as the way she stands up for a target audience others miss. We are inspired and impressed by the Rising Star of the year."

Catherine, who speaks several European languages, joined The Local as Europe editor in 2015 to assist the country editors of The Local's nine news sites, with a special focus on Italy. Since 2018 she has mostly been working as deputy editor of the Sweden site, where she last year launched The Local's first Book Club.

"Catherine has been doing brilliant work ever since she started at The Local. She is always thinking of new ways to engage our readers, and her enthusiasm especially during this turbulent year has been indispensable as we've kept growing our membership," said The Local's deputy managing editor and Sweden editor Emma Löfgren.

It is the second journalism gong for Catherine in less than two months. She was one of the winners in the journalism category of this year's FIPP UPM Rising Star Awards. She was also Sweden ambassador for the European Journalism Centre's Engaged Journalism Accelerator in 2019, and is one of three journalists running The Local's ongoing solutions journalism training for migration reporters.

Founded by James Savage and Paul Rapacioli in Stockholm in 2004, The Local's nine-country network is today read by millions of people all over the world every month and has grown from 13,000 paying members at the start of 2020 to more than 35,000 today. It was named Sweden's best digital publisher of the year in 2018.
