The figures recorded over the weekend more than doubled the increase of 25,595 new infections on Friday, data published by Spain’s health ministry revealed.

The death toll went up by 379, bringing the total number of official coronavirus fatalities to 36,257 in Spain although the true figure is thought to be as much as 55,000.

The 379 new deaths recorded was the steepest one-day rise during the second wave, although it can partly be explained by a delay in reporting cases over the three day bank holiday weekend.

And although the highest recording of deaths during the second wave it is far from the fatalities seen during the first lockdown when Spain recorded a peak of 950 deaths on April 3rd.

The official cumulative number of infections now stands at 1,240,697, but Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has explained that using data from prevalence studies and estimates, the real total is likely to be above 3 million.

Experts predict that Spain is heading towards a new home lockdown as case numbers rise.

Dr. Rafael Bengoa, co-founder of Bilbao’s Institute for Health and Strategy, predicted Spain would impose a home lockdown within two weeks because the rate of infection was not slowing down.

“With the current measures, they are not lowering the infection rates, and it is necessary to go to the next level, a March-April type confinement,” he told Catalunya Radio on Sunday.

So far only the northern region of Asturias has asked for permission to impose a two-week home lockdown as the pressure on health services reached breaking point, a request denied by Spain’s central government.
