Move over, "smart working". Italy's remote workers now have the chance to join Zoom calls from the middle of the Adriatic sea, as a competition aims to highlight the benefits of working remotely in southern Italy.

Working remotely was almost unheard of in Italy before the coronavirus outbreak shut down almost all of the country's workplaces for months. But now many people have adjusted to working from home - often referred to as "smart working" in Italy - and a growing number have decided city living is no longer for them.

Demand for homes in the Italian countryside has surged as people find they can do their job without having to pay high rents in Rome or Milan. And people are increasingly considering the merits of moving back to small, under-inhabited villages, or moving to southern Italy from the more industrialised north .

Now though, you can take things a step further with "sea working": working online from a boat.

If you fancy trying it out for yourself, you don't have to buy your own boat just yet.

One lucky person will win the chance to spend ten days working remotely this October on a "fully equipped" sailboat complete with office and "fast" internet connection, off the coast of Brindisi, Puglia; famed for its clear waters and mild, sunny climate.

Brindisi's local authorities partnered with business groups to launch the contest this week, as the coastal city aims to become Italy's top destination for remote workers.

The competitions organisers say Brindisi "guarantees" a lower cost of living compared to large cities as well as "food, wine, culture, more relaxing rhythms of life, and having the sea close at hand".

The winner will "be able to improve their productivity through experiences in destinations designed to improve work performance" with "a taste of Brindisi's tourist offering," reads the competition website.

They will be asked to keep a "logbook" recording their experiences of working remotely at sea.

To enter the competition, just fill out the online entry form before September 18th.
