'Tropical nights' in store for Denmark as hot weather gets hotter

High daytime temperatures will be accompanied by ‘tropical’ nights, national meteorology institute DMI forecasts.

DMI classifies a night as tropical if the temperature remains above 20 degrees Celsius throughout a 24-hour period.

“It will be splendid summer weather this weekend,” DMI meteorologist Frank Nielsen said on Friday morning.

“We’ll start fresh early Friday morning with 12-15 degrees. But the temperature will increase quickly and we will have full sun and 23 to 28 degrees,” he continued.

The coolest temperatures will be found in coastal areas with onshore winds, Nielsen said.

Southwest Jutland can expect the country’s hottest temperatures, reaching up to 30 degrees.

 

Almost no wind is forecast.

Saturday will see the heat cranked up further still, with 25-30 degrees forecast nationwide and cooler temperatures coming with onshore winds on the west coast. Close to no wind is predicted elsewhere.

The weather on Sunday will be “basically a copy” of Saturday, with 32 degrees forecast as the maximum temperature locally.

An increase in humidity is also expected from Sunday.

DMI has issued a ‘category 2’ weather warning for the coming weekend.

“That is not a warning in the sense that we normally know it when talking about something like storm-strength winds. This should be seen more as a consideration of vulnerable people who might find it hard to cope with the heat and who don’t always remember to drink enough water,” Nielsen explained.

“Up to now, it’s been possible to breathe in the evenings and at night, but on Sunday and Monday we will have tropical nights in some places,” he added.
