83 people have been refused Danish citizenship in the past two years because they have committed serious crimes.

The rejections are a result of stricter rules introduced in 2018 under the previous government. The Social Democrats, now the ruling party after winning the 2019 general election, also voted for the measure in 2018.

The figures were announced by the Ministry of Immigration and Integration on Friday.

“These restrictions have quite clearly worked. Far fewer criminals are being granted citizenship. I think we should be pleased about that,” immigration minister Mattias Tesfaye said.

Persons with convictions for crimes including gang crime, assaulting children and sexual assault are amongst those refused citizenship.

An unconditional prison sentence of one year or more is the basis upon which a convicted criminal is permanently barred from Danish citizenship.

The rule also applies for crimes endangering others if unconditional sentences of three months or more in prison are given.
