Severe storms across central and southern Spain yesterday left devastation in their wake, causing flooding, power cuts and blocked roads.

Heavy rain accompanied by hail on August 11th caused flooding in the streets of the towns particularly around Seville in towns such as Estepa, Puebla de Cazalla, Écija and Carmona.

There have been reports of some thirty incidents, in the area including several power cuts and road blockages.

In Estepa powerful torrents of water destroyed buildings and washed several cars away, leaving waterfalls of mud and rainwater tearing through its streets.

The nearby town of Herrera had its electricity supply cut, affecting all its 7,000 inhabitants, reports 20Minutos.

While in the town of Torrelodones near Madrid, the summer storm has left at least one injured with lightning burns, in addition to flooded streets and blocked roads, according to El Español.

There have been rains in the central region of up to 30 litres per square meter and strong gusts of wind.

Andalusia, Asturias, Castilla-La Mancha, Galicia and Madrid are all currently still on orange alerts with storm and flood warnings in place.

"A drop in height, together with the arrival of humid and unstable air from the south has created a favourable scenario for the appearance of severe storms," said Rubén del Campo, spokesman for the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
