The coronavirus crisis caused unemployment in Denmark to increase sharply, but latest figures show some improvement.

New data from the Ministry of Employment show that the number of people without work is at its lowest level in several months.

According to the data, 172,870 people have registered themselves as jobseekers this week, the lowest total since March 31st.

Unemployment has meanwhile fallen by 9,365 since August 1st.

That represents an improvement as positive as could have been hoped for, an analyst said.

“This is an extremely pleasant surprise to be able to say, given that we had instead expected a new jump in unemployment or in the best case a plateau,” Arbejdernes Landsbank head economist Jeppe Juul Borre said.

“Even though we’re in the middle of a big economic downturn, there are some positive signs which we should allow ourselves to be pleased about,” he added.
