The Local Spain asked readers whether the UK was right to impose new and sudden quarantine rules on travellers returning from Spain. The result of our polls were pretty clear.

Was the snap decision to impose blanket quarantine on those returning from all regions of Spain the right one given the rise in coronavirus outbreaks in the country?

Or it is a knee-jerk reaction that doesn't consider the reality of the situation on the ground; some regions in Spain have lower transmission rates than the UK, increased testing is picking up more cases, Spanish authorities insist the outbreaks are under control.

This was the verdict on Twitter.

And on Facebook the division of opinion was similar with a big majority believing quarantine was not the right option to prevent an influx of cases.

Reader Rob Page said: "No I don't think it was right .there should have been more notice. Not wait until people are on holiday. And some of those have to get back to work . Why cannot they be tested when they arrive back in the UK."

Vicki Wood echoed the views of many saying: "It should be regionalised. We have very few cases in Andalucia."

And one of the most popular views was from Matt Hunter: "I would understand it if it were travellers from Barcelona, Reus, Tarragona or Zaragoza but to put a blanket rule on all of Spain smacks of arbitrary decision-making to have the appearance of being proactive (bit late now)."
