Sweden lifts travel warning for another three countries
Sweden's foreign ministry on Wednesday will lift its recommendations against non-essential travel to Germany, Poland and Andorra from July 15th onwards, but reintroduce them for Switzerland.
"After July 15th, 2020, the recommendation against non-essential travel to Andorra, Poland and Germany will be lifted," said the Swedish foreign ministry in a statement on Tuesday afternoon.
The advice against non-essential travel was earlier this summer lifted for Belgium, France, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Croatia, Monaco, Luxembourg, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Hungary and the Vatican (and Switzerland), and with the exception of Switzerland this decision remains in place.
The ministry's recommendations against non-essential travel to other countries in the EU, EEA and Schengen area, as well as the UK and Switzerland, were on Tuesday extended until July 29th.
Travel warnings to other countries outside the EU are in place until August 31st.
The foreign ministry's advice against non-essential travel is not a legally binding ban, but has other implications, for example that your travel insurance may not be valid if you disregard the advice.
The guidance has been in place since an early stage in the pandemic, due to global uncertainty and travel bans.
The recommendation is linked to travel restrictions and the fast-changing global situation, which could leave travellers stranded, rather than infection risks posed directly by the coronavirus itself.
For that reason, the countries exempted from the advice are generally countries without restrictions, such as mandatory quarantines, for Swedes who travel there. The key word is 'generally'; there may be exceptions and each traveller is responsible for keeping up-to-date with any changes in rules.
If you travel to one of these countries, you still need to make sure that you are aware of any coronavirus-related regulations still in place, for example local travel restrictions, any travel documents you need to show on the border, or rules such as the use of a face mask.
