Weddings, sporting competitions and other events are now allowed to welcome more people in Germany’s most populous state.

As of Sunday, July 12th, newlyweds can welcome a maximum of 150 people to their special day, increasing from the previous max of 50.

The same maximum will also apply to other events and gatherings, including anniversaries, christenings, birthdays and graduation parties.

The state government said on Sunday that contact tracing is a requirement at all such events.

NRW Minister of Health Karl-Josef Laumann, of the centre-right Christian Democrats (CDU) said “the positive nationwide development of the numbers opens up smaller scope for us which we want to use responsibly for more freedom."

“The more freedoms are possible, the more important it is that we identify infected people as quickly as possible through tests and, if necessary, pronounce short contact restrictions.

“This is especially true for larger infection risks, such as staying in a risk area, which is particularly important now during the holiday season.”

For cultural events, the maximum number can increase from 100 to 300, while indoor contact sports can now have a maximum of 30 rather than 10 people.

The number of spectators at sporting events in the state increases from 100 to 300 as well.
