The arrival of summer brings plenty of heat to France as temperatures across much of the country will surpass 30C during the next week.

With Sunday June 21st signalling the beginning of the summer, it hasn’t taken long for the mercury to start rising as temperatures will increase on Monday across much of France.

By Tuesday it will hit 30C in the southwest but remain under 30C in the northern half of the country.

By Wednesday however the summer heat will have well and truly spread across the whole of Metropolitan France and the 30C threshold will be surpassed on a daily basis until Saturday.

According to Météo France, Parisians can expect up to “34 C in Ile-de-France” as well around the Rhone Valley in the southwest of the country.

“The threshold for very hot weather (35C) could be exceeded on a local level and minimum temperatures will hover around 20C,” France’s national weather agency added.

These “above normal” temperatures for the time of year are in line with forecasts that 2020 will be one of the hottest years on record in France, and globally.

Las year was the third hottest year in mainland France after 2018 and 2014, marked by two exceptional heat waves and an all-time record of 46C.

So far 2020 has followed this trend, with comparatively mild weather in winter and a spring season that has been the second warmest on record.

Météo-France believes that global warming will make the number of heat waves double by 2050.
