Weather LATEST: Sweden just had its hottest day of the year
The summer got off to a sweltering start when one town recorded Sweden's hottest day of the year.
The mercury soared to 30.4C at Delsbo, a small town in the municipality of Hudiksvall in central-eastern Sweden, on Monday, according to preliminary figures by Sweden's national weather agency SMHI.
That's the highest temperature recorded so far this year in Sweden, and the warm weather was set to continue on Tuesday, but SMHI also warned of an elevated risk of wildfires in almost the entire country.
But temperatures are expected to cool down later this week, with possible thunderstorms on Tuesday.
The coronavirus epidemic has seen many people spend more time outside, for example going for walks in one of the country's many forests – one of the few things people in Sweden are still encouraged to do.
But authorities have urged people to be especially careful when lighting barbecues in the wild. No one wants a repeat of the summer of 2018, which saw an unprecedented spate of forest fires rage through Sweden.
Swedish vocabulary
summer – (en) sommar
the weather – vädret
forest fire – (en) skogsbrand
thunder – åska
outdoor life – (ett) friluftsliv
