These are the top five summer jobs still available in Sweden
Summer is often the perfect time for unemployed newcomers to break into the Swedish job market – but during the corona crisis the number of advertised summer jobs have dropped by half compared to last year.
Thousands of jobs have already been hit hard by the economic crisis fuelled by the coronavirus pandemic, whether we're talking freelancers, struggling companies having to lay off workers or firms simply going bust.
And the summer job sector is no different. Sweden's full-time employees may take four consecutive weeks off during June-August, so there are usually plenty of temporary substitute openings available on top of seasonal work. And while many jobs require Swedish, the summer season often offers more opportunities than usual for those with limited Swedish skills, and is a good time to get a foot onto the career ladder.
But in April around half the number of new summer vacancies were posted on the Swedish national job agency Arbetsförmedlingen's Platsbanken site, compared to last year (which was a record year).
"But the statistics are very uncertain because of the crisis. It is far from sure that all advertised positions will be filled," said Johan Eklöf, analyst for Arbetsförmedlingen, in a statement on Wednesday.
The job shortage is especially noticeable in industries affected by a lot of layoffs, for example the hotel and restaurant sector and tourism, but there is a decrease in the number of summer jobs across the board.
The healthcare sector is the one that stands out in terms of still needing summer workers.
"Elderly care and healthcare never stop and the staff working now need a vacation," said Eklöf.
These are the five top professions looking for summer workers via Platsbanken:
1. Undersköterskor – assistant nurses, home carers, elderly care homes
2. Vårdbiträden – care assistants in home care or elderly care homes
3. Vårdare, boendestödjare – working with people with mental disabilities
4. Restaurang- och köksbiträden – restaurant or kitchen assistants (note that Arbetsförmedlingen advises that most of these positions were advertised before the corona crisis and "probably do not reflect reality")
5. Personliga assistenter – personal assistants
