The Danish political TV drama Borgen, which first brought the Danish actress Birgitte Hjort Sørensen to international attention, is to return for a new series backed by Netflix.

The show, named after Christiansborg Palace, the seat of Denmark's parliament, managed the impressive feat of building an international TV hit out of the convoluted deal-making involved in Danish bloc politics.

It became cult viewing when it was aired on the UK's BBC 4 channel in 2012 and 2013, with each episode live-blogged by the Guardian and other UK newspapers.

"It is a great pleasure again to enter the political universe and not least the gallery of characters in 'Borgen'. It's like seeing old close friends," Adam Price, the show's creator and screenwriter, told DR.

The new series will yet again centre on the relationship between the Prime Minister Birgitte Nyborg, played by the actress Sidse Babett Knudsen, and Katrine Fønsmark, her former press chief, played by Hjort Sørensen.

In the new series, Nyborg has been appointed foreign minister in a new government after a long period in opposition,  while Fønsmark has been appointed to an executive position at a Danish TV channel.

According to Price, the new series will be more international than those that aired in Denmark between 2010 and 2013.

The new version of 'Borgen' is being developed by DR in collaboration with the production company SAM Productions and the international streaming giant Netflix.
