Coronavirus: Zurich unveils plan to save daycare centres
Daycare centres in Zurich, under pressure due to lower enrolments as a result of the coronavirus, will be funded to the tune of 13 million francs per month in order to keep them afloat.

The plan, announced on Thursday by Zurich cantonal authorities, is to provide funding to daycare centres to see them through the crisis.

As reported in the Tages Anzeiger, the funds will be jointly provided by the canton and by municipal authorities.

The emergency ordinance will provide CHF13 million per month, with affected daycare centres needing to make an application to cantonal authorities in order to receive the funds.

The money will cover 80 percent of the damage suffered by the daycare centre.

Plunging enrolment numbers

There are an estimated 20,000 childcare places in Zurich canton in around 700 daycare centres.

Due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, cantonal authorities estimate that they are operating at an average of 30 percent of capacity.
