It's currently impossible to renew many official documents, such as ID cards and driving licenses, while Italy is under lockdown and many offices remain closed.

Under new emergency measures, the validity of these documents will be automatically extended, the government has announced.

The updated national emergency decree on March 23 included the provision that all types of identity documents will remain valid until August 31, 2020 .

The extension is automatic and applies to all identity documents expired or expiring from March 17 onwards.
