An annual competition that aims to create small green spaces in the urban environment, is now open. Thirty thousand francs is set aside for prizes.

For the first time since the Nature in the City project was launched in 2014, its organizer, the canton of Geneva, has widened the scope of the contest to include the so-called Greater Geneva area – the agglomeration of 209 communities stretching into neighbouring France.

Many people commute from that area of France to work in Geneva each day, so their connection to the city is strong.

The outlying regions have been included "because the challenges linked to the quality of the living environment of this shared space do not stop at the border", said Delia Fontaine, who is in charge of the project.

Authorities are encouraging contest participants to create spaces that benefit biodiversity, such as urban vegetable gardens, green roofs, native hedges, or flowery meadows.

"Sometimes it only takes a little bit for these bits of greenery to bring new life to our living spaces," Fontaine said.

To participate in the competition, candidates can apply until May 31st.

The winners will be announced in the autumn.
