The man was found dead in the resort of Méribel in the French Alps, where he had been working during the ski season.

The man, whose name has not been released by authorities, had been reported missing by friends when he failed to return from a night out on Wednesday.

His body was found at the bottom of a rocky precipice the following day.

Police in the Savoie départment told French media that it is believed he became lost while walking home at night and fell while attempting to take a shortcut.

An investigation has been opened by the Albertville public prosecutor's office to determine the circumstances of the death.

Savoie and neighbouring Haut-Savoie are popular destinations for British seasonal workers due to the high concentration of Alpine resorts offering short-term work contracts during the ski season.
