Heavy snow to fall on northern Sweden into next week

Parts of northern Sweden could be hit by as much as a meter's snowfall on Sunday, Sweden's state forecaster SMHI has warned.
The agency has issued a class-1 weather warning for the country of Västerbotten.
"Just now there's intensive and plentiful snowfall and it's going to continue during Sunday. There could be a lot of it," SMHI meteorologist Max Lindberg Stoltz told the TT newswire at 2am on Sunday morning. "The weather front isn't moving on, so it's going to stay for a while."
The forecaster has issued a class 1 weather warning for the inland and mountain areas of Västerbotten county, which stretches inland from the port city of Umeå.
It is predicting more than 30cm of snow inland and more than 60m inland, with more than a metre in some places. The snowfall is expected to continue into next week.
The agency has also issued a weather warning for ice on the roads in Jämtland -- home of Åre, Sweden's leading ski resort, but heavy snowfall is also expected.

Sweden has seen unusually low snowfall this year, with the more southerly ski resorts unable to open many runs, and the organisers of the Vasaloppet ski race forced to dump snow on the tracks to make sure the race can go ahead in March.
Snow cover in Sweden currently starts in the middle of Dalarna, much further north than it normally does at this time of year.
"It's mainly in the upland areas of southern Sweden that we might get some snow cover," Lindberg Stoltz said. "It's going to be around zero degrees and perhaps a bit below zero at night. We can't expect any real winter weather."
