A total of 355,704 new cars were registered in 2019, said Swedish automakers' association Bil Sweden – making it the third top year for new cars in the organization's history.

But this year the figure is expected to drop to around 330,000 new cars, as Sweden's economy slows down.

Heavy trucks weighing more than 16 tonnes had a record-breaking year, with 6,641 such vehicles registered in 2019.

It was also a good year for electric cars, with sales of pure electric cars and plugin hybrids growing by 39 percent.

Electric cars and plugin hybrids made up 11.4 percent of all new cars registered in 2019, up from 8.2 percent in 2018. Bil Sweden predicts the share will increase to 30 percent in 2020, 40 percent next year – and 80 percent in 2030 as the market for environmentally-friendly cars keeps growing.
