The week got off to a slippery start as temperatures dropped sharply, with the mercury set to fall below freezing even in southern Sweden overnight.

The sudden cold snap caused several traffic accidents in central Sweden on Monday morning. Meanwhile, temperatures in northern Karesuando dropped to -23.9C – the coldest October temperature since 2006.

A special message to readers in southern Sweden who think you may be able to enjoy the autumn warmth a bit longer: don't get on your high horses. Winter is coming for you, too. It's happening sooner than you think.

In fact, temperatures may fall below freezing in southern Sweden as early as tonight, according to meteorologists at national weather agency SMHI, and are expected to stay low through the week.

Drivers are urged to take extra care on the roads, especially if you are driving early in the morning, as Swedish roads are notoriously unpredictable this time of the year.

Swedish news agency TT warns that roads may currently be especially slippery in almost all of northern Sweden, as well as parts of the Dalarna region, Västerås, Enköping, Uppsala and southern Östergötland.
