One man has died and several more were injured after multiple knife attacks took place in Gothenburg over the weekend.

A 20-year-old was reported dead after he was stabbed during a scuffle close to the western city's central station.

"Several people called in about the incident and the phone operators heard shouting in the background. One man had been stabbed and lay on the ground bleeding heavily. He was unconscious when the police patrol arrived," a police press spokesperson said.

The man died shortly after he arrived at the hospital in the early hours of Saturday morning.

One man has been detained on suspicion of murder or manslaughter and a further nine people have been brought in for questioning in connection with that incident.

On Saturday night, at least six people were injured in what police described as "a rowdy night with several stabbings".

After a fight broke out at a school in the Mölndal suburb around 11pm on Saturday night, four men were injured, one of them seriously.

"It was two different groups who met at the school and something went wrong when they met. A bag with some cannabis was found, so it could be that some were there to buy and some to sell, but that's a working hypothesis," said a police press spokesperson.

Three hours later, an 18-year-old was the victim of a stabbing in Lerum. Two suspects were later detained, and the victim was reported to be conscious.

And around 4am, a man aged 35 was stabbed during a mugging in Annedal, south of the city centre. The victim was on his way home from a pub when he said he was attacked by three men at a tram stop.

He was stabbed in the back and taken to hospital, but his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Commenting on the series of incidents, a police press officer told Göteborgs-Posten: "It's alarming. If you stab someone, you never know what it will do to them inside the body, and there have been several knife murders in Gothenburg in just a few months."

He said that it would be a good idea for Sweden to review its laws on knife crime, "due to the number of murders and what seems to be an increase in knife violence".
