Supermarkets across Germany are recalling several low fat milk products over fears they could be contaminated by bacteria.

Large chains such as Edeka, Rewe, Lidl and Aldi are affected.

The dairy groups DMK Group as well as Fude + Serrahn reported that routine checks of products showed abnormalities, with the bacterium Aeromonas hydrophila/caviae detected. If consumed, this can lead to health issues such as diarrhoea.

The trading companies supplied with the milk have reacted accordingly and taken milk products that could be affected off the shelves.

The following products with the mark DE NW 508 EC (which is usually found on the side of the milk carton) and the specified minimum use by dates (Mindesthaltbarkeitsdatum or MHD in German) are affected. Products with different ID marks are not affected.

If you have one of these products, you should not drink it and instead take it back to the supermarket you purchased it from, where you are entitled to a refund or replacement.

• ALDI SÜD Milfina Frische Milch 1,5 % Fett with the MHD 10.10.2019/ 14.10.2019

• Kaufland Warenhandel GmbH & Co. KG K-Classic Frische Milch 1,5 % Fett with the MHD 14.10.2019/ 15.10.2019/ 18.10.2019

• Lidl GmbH & Co. KG Milbona Frische Milch 1,5 % Fett with the MHD 13.10.2019/ 14.10.2019/ 16.10.2019/ 18.10.2019

• Bartels-Langness Handelsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG Tip Frische Milch 1,5 % Fett with the MHD 14.10.2019/ 15.10.2019/ 18.10.2019 Hofgut Frische Milch 1,5 % Fett with the MHD 18.10.2019
