The six best Spanish wines for €5 or less
If you’re searching for the best value for money Spanish wines on the market, here’s what the experts recommend.
As you probably know already, Spain is a big player in the global wine industry.
It has more vineyards that any other country on the planet (almost one million hectares) and is a huge exporter of ‘vino’ (24 million hectolitres, about two thirds of production).
With so much variety and quality available it can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming when it comes to picking ‘the winner’ from the crowd of bottles in the supermarket’s wine aisle.

Fortunately, there are experts who do all the ‘hard work’ for us ordinary mortals.
Such is the case for the connoisseurs behind Spain’s Guía Vinos Gourmet, a guidebook to Spanish wine which for its 2019 edition conducted more than 4,600 blind samplings at 1,118 wineries across the country.
Out of all these, they selected 6 wines that cost €5 or less which they have judged to be of excellent quality, all scoring 90 percent or above.
Here are the six Spanish wines that offer the best value for money:
Viore (2017): €3
A sweet Rueda white wine described as “clean and intense” as well as “fresh, well-balanced and unctuous with a long-lasting peach aftertaste”.

Las Campanas (2017): €3.85
A Navarra rosé with a “raspberry pink” colour which according to the experts has an “strong and primary aroma and taste" as well as a “persistent aftertaste that incites you to carry on drinking”.

Vinea (2017): €5
Here’s another exceptional rosé, this time of Spain’s Tempranillo black grape variety. Described as “juicy and fresh” in the 2019 Vinos Gourmet guide, who give it a 90 percent rating.

Apricus (2017): €5
Finally a red on the list: a young Ribera del Duero ‘tinto’ that gets an incredible 91 percent score.
“Very primary taste, with hints of blackberries, raspberries, blueberries”- the experts say - "it’s juicy, sparkling and cheerful", the latter presumably based on how it made them feel after a couple of glasses.

Corpus del Muni (2017): €4.35
Here’s another young red wine with a very high rating thanks to its “remarkable intensity” and very varied aromas, “from liquorice to blueberries or milk chocolate…“with a roasted and spicy aftertaste”.

Manzanilla La Gitana: €4,65
The highest rating for a Spanish wine under €5 was awarded to this very special Manzanilla sherry, which got 94 percent. It has a “persistent aftertaste pack full of hints of different flavours”, the experts say.
