The alarm was raised on Monday at around 9am at the popular snack bar Mustafa's Gemüse Kebap in Kreuzberg. It is thought that a fryer caught fire. Smoke could be seen coming from the fast food stand in the morning.

The blaze was put out within about 10 minutes. Nobody was injured, But the fire service said the fast food stall is badly damaged.

The Berlin Fire Service tweeted that no-one was injured in the fire but the stand had been damaged.

The cult kebab shop is well-known among Berliners and tourists alike. A long queue regularly forms in front of the stand at Mehringdamm.

It opened in 2006 and is said to have developed a cult following after two marketing students asked if they could take the food stall on as a client. They created a hip, modern website for the stand - something virtually unheard of in 2006 Berlin, according to media reports.

Their marketing campaign paid off, with the stand shooting to the top of must-do lists for the German capital, attracting tourists from around the world.

But those who want to try the food for themselves should not be too worried. The head of the snack bar Tarik Kara, who lives right opposite the stand, told the Berliner Morgenpost he is confident it will open again soon.

"We will reopen in two to three days," he said.
