Sweden's Migration Agency reached a decision in 3,390 work permit cases during September. Here's an in depth look at how many permits were granted, and to whom.

A total of 3,878 work permit applications were made in Sweden last month, and 3,390 work permit applicants received decisions.

Of those, 2,483 were approved. And in 717 of the approved cases, the applicant was moving to Sweden to work for one of the Migration Agency's so-called 'certified employers', a group of companies which have already proved to the agency that they meet certain criteria (including a recurring need for non-EU hires and proof that they have fulfilled legal requirements in previous work permit cases) and for whom processing takes a maximum of 20 days.

So who did the work permits go to?

The vast majority of permits were granted to people who will work as employees of a company in Sweden (1,165 cases) and their family members (1,093 cases).

Family members, including spouses or registered partners, are typically included on a partner's work permit if they will also move to Sweden. If the partner who makes the application has a job offer of over six months, their partner is also eligible for a work permit.

A further 65 permits were granted to guest researchers and 15 to self-employed people, while remaining cases fell into other categories including international exchanges, internships, and athletes.

The chart below shows how many permits were granted by different fields. This graph does not include those who were family members, self-employed, interns, or guest researchers.

A total of 15,837 work permit applicants were still waiting for a decision to be made on their case as of September 30th.
