Today's word of the day is 'hoja', which means several things in Spanish. It's used as leaf, sheet or blade and you will find it in other various expressions.

Let’s turn over a new leaf and see some examples of this latest word. 

 

  • En otoño las hojas de los árboles tienen un color rojizo precioso. 

        In autumn, the leaves of the trees are a beautiful reddish color.

 

  • Saca las hojas de la impresora, todavía no funciona.

                Take out the sheets of paper from the printer, it still doesn't work.

 

  •     El chef dijo que la hoja del cuchillo estaba bien afilada.

                The chef said the knife blade was sharp.

 

If you say ‘árbol de hoja caduca’ it means deciduous tree: 

 

  • En el colegio aprendes el nombre de los árboles de hoja caduca.

              In school you learn the names of deciduous trees.


 

And if you ask for ‘una hoja de reclamaciones’ , you are asking for a complaints form:

 

  • Todos los establecimientos están obligados a disponer de hojas de reclamaciones.

               All establishments are required to have a complaints form. 

 

The expression ‘no hay vuelta de hoja’ means there is no turning back:

 

  • Tiene que ser así, es la única solución no hay vuelta de hoja. 

               It has to be this way, it is the only solution and there is no turning back.
