Ryanair flights to and from Germany cancelled
Passengers were left stranded this week as flights in and out of Germany were cancelled due to Europe-wide cabin crew strikes at budget airline Ryanair. Airports across the country reported flight cancellations, with Cologne/Bonn the worst affected.
Ryanair announced 300 flight cancellations across Europe this week, as staff went on strike in Belgium, Spain and Portugal on Wednesday and Thursday in an ongoing row over pay. The strikes have affected at least fifteen flights in and out of Germany.
A total of eight take-offs and landings scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday had been cancelled at Cologne/Bonn airport, authorities there told DPA on Wednesday morning, while Berlin Schönefeld airport reported seven cancellations.
There were also individual cancellations at Nuremberg, Hamburg, Munich-Memmingen and Bremen airports. Stuttgart, Munich and Frankfurt airports remain unaffected thus far.
The strikes are the latest development in a month of malaise at Ryanair, as staff across Europe continue to demand improvements in pay and working conditions.
The airline had already been hit by three successive pilot walk-outs in Ireland this month, before this week's strikes hit flights to and from Belgium, Spain and Portugal. The majority of cancellations in Germany were for flights bound for the latter two destinations, German media reported.
Italian trade union CGIL had also called for strikes on Wednesday, but it remains unclear as to whether flights in and out of Italy have been affected. There is no indication as of yet that unions in Germany will call for similar strike action.
Last week, Ryanair refused to publish a comprehensive list of flight cancellations, but in a statement on Tuesday evening, the company estimated that around 50,000 passengers Europe-wide had been affected.

The company claimed that all affected passengers had either been refunded or booked onto an alternative flight, and that no further cancellations were expected on Wednesday.
